There are a number of obligatory to-dos to cross off during the holidays – sip on hot chocolate, put on a cheesy Hallmark Christmas film, sing along to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” – and one other thing that needs to be added to your list is securing tickets for Hong Kong Ballet’s annual production of ‘The Nutcracker”. The emphasis is on “securing” because this show does sell out!

Septime Webre’s beloved rendition of “The Nutcracker” has been done countless times by HK Ballet, and each year the company steps up its game to new heights. This year’s production gives a nod to early 20th century Hong Kong, adding a local spin on the Christmas classic. Expect a kaleidoscopic display of blossoming bauhinias, energetic racing jockeys, and pretty peacocks and cockatoos.

There is something so quintessentially Christmas about the show. The story begins at a lively Christmas Eve party in a gilded mansion where young Clara receives a very special nutcracker as a gift. From there, we are taken on a fantastical journey through magnificent sets, glittering costumes and enchanting performances.

HK Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” opens on Friday, 15 December with 19 performance through Saturday, 30 December. Guests can enjoy Tchaikovsky’s timeless score performed live by Hong Kong Sinfonietta under the baton of Fayçal Karoui for selected performances.

Don your glad rags and get ready to travel back to the golden age of jazz, in opulent 1920s New York. Hong Kong Ballet’s production of “The Great Gatsby” returns  after its sold-out 2019 debut for eight exuberant performances, between Friday, 27 October and Sunday, 5 November.

Described by critics as “a feast for the eyes”, brace yourself for rambunctious revelry, as we follow our enigmatic host, Jay Gatsby, into his world of carefree frivolity, against the backdrop of all-consuming love, thwarted ambition and shocking scandals. Needless to say, it’s a party you won’t want to miss.

Narrated by James Seol, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s cautionary tale of love, wealth and betrayal, comes to life on stage in this spirited production choreographed by the esteemed Septime Webre. Setting the tone of the show with steamy jazz tunes will be Billy Novick’s Blue Syncopators and award-winning blues singer E. Faye Butler, performing live.

This special production showcases local veteran Tan-ki Wong’s bravura tap dancing, alongside original Art Deco sets and costumes by Academy Award-winning designer Tim Yip (best known for his work on “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). In true Gatsby fashion, HK Ballet is pulling out all the stops and we expect the show to be the talk of the town.
