What To Know About Aluminium-Free Natural Deodorants

Brands have been experimenting with different formulations for natural deodorants for a while! But making the switch still might not be as simple as you may first think. If you’ve been using regular antiperspirants for years, your underarms will go through a transition period as they adjust to their new, all-natural, environmentally-friendly way of odour-free life.

Read More: 5 All-Natural DIY Tips For You And Your Home

What’s the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?

Your sweat itself doesn’t have a bad odour — until it mixes with bacteria on your skin. Deodorants and antiperspirants work in different ways to mask or prevent this bad smell.

  • Deodorants block or mask body odour with a presumably more pleasant scent. They may also create a more acidic environment where applied, which may prevent the bacteria from releasing odours.
  • Antiperspirants use ingredients, usually aluminium-based, to block sweat glands, reducing the amount of perspiration released.

The Pros: It’s All-Natural!

These deodorants are all-natural and botanical-based, which means they should be free of any excessive and unnecessary chemicals. Instead, ingredients like charcoal, mineral-rich clays and plant-based butters and oils promise to be gentler on the skin.

It’s worth noting there is no substantial scientific evidence to support the claim that aluminium-based antiperspirants may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

The Pros: It’s Environmentally-Friendly

Some traditional formulas contain the antimicrobial agent triclosan, which accumulates in our rivers and streams after being washed from our bodies. This may negatively impact the environment (and us, although there is no clear evidence at present). What is clearer, however, is that antiperspirants tend to come in non-recyclable and non-refillable packaging.

The Cons: Your Body May Need Time To Adjust

If your underarms are used to regular-strength antiperspirants, changing to natural, simpler products could come with a detox journey. With no aluminium compound to “plug” your sweat glands, they’ll be exposed again. You may experience a seemingly substantial increase in the growth of odour-causing bacteria and excessive sweating — but these levels should normalise and your underarms should fully adjust.

The Cons: It Takes A Little Trial And Error

There’s now a wide range of natural alternatives on the market, coming in various formulas and with different ingredients. This means it can be a little bit of a hassle to find one that truly is for you — what works for one person may not work for everyone! Take some time to experiment and test the options available.

Ever wondered if you’re doing make-up that suits your facial features? MUA Iana Zinovieva spills expert tips and dolls up two Sassy ladies!

With ever-changing beauty trends and constant new brand drops, it can be overwhelming to explore the world of make-up. How should I contour my face, or should I contour at all? How should I do my eyeliner, should I wing it? What’s my undertone? Too many questions!

Ahead, we teamed up with internationally certified professional make-up and brow artist, Iana Zinovieva who shares her tips and tricks for doing make-up that best suits your face shape and features. Iana’s beauty salon, Wish Beauty Bar emphasises embracing natural beauty and your own individual style by enhancing your features and flattering your skintone.

Our Editor Fashila Kanakka and Graphic Designer Joy Lee got glammed up by Iana (spoiler: we used a lot of Charlotte Tilbury!) to demonstrate different techniques and shades for different features.

But First, Skin Prep

Before any makeup application, it’s important to prep your skin to ensure you have a good base to work with. Iana likes to begin with a double cleanse using an oil cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser to remove impurities. She then goes in with a hydrating toner, made with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and squalene to boost collagen and soften your skin.

Follow that up with a thin layer of hydrating vitamin serum (Iana uses YSL!). For oily skin, she suggests working slightly in reverse – hydrate, set with spray and powder, and then apply makeup.

Iana really believes in massaging the face! If you have the time, she swears by a lymphatic drainage massage, using your hands or a tool, to improve blood circulation and help active ingredients in your skincare to penetrate deeper. In particular, focus on your eye and nose area – for de-puffing, de-stressing and minimising the appearance of larger pores.

Depending on the time of day, you can finish your skin prep with SPF application. In Hong Kong, Iana suggests applying SPF at all times of day because we have such a hot climate (better to be safe)! She applies sunscreen with a brush and goes over the lashes and eyebrows, which tend to get depigmented and can benefit from sun protection.

Pro Tip: Iana suggests doing the base after doing your eyes and brows as makeup oxidises and changes colour.

Fashila’s Make-Up Look – Balanced features, deep skin tone and a focus on the eyes

Fashila’s face is quite symmetrical and balanced, so she can elongate the eye or choose to round it! Her forehead, nose, and mouth are quite proportional, giving more flexibility for Iana to work her magic.

Iana starts with a cream eyeshadow on the lid, working it towards the lash line just above Fashila’s natural crease – starting with lighter shades then dark and then applying glitter or shimmer to the middle of the eye.

To create a little more dimension and volume in the lash line, Iana applies a brown kohl pencil from Charlotte Tilbury. She uses a creamy eyeliner and then sealed it with a mix of darker colours, to create a smoky effect without a distinct colour, so it looks like your real lashes, and more natural.

Although Fashila’s eyebrows are dark, Iana would never use a very dark colour, she likes to use a lighter colour to start so it’s easier to manage. She enhances Fashila’s eyebrows, following their natural shape to lift and define the eye area.

Iana doesn’t use very strong colours to contour, she prefers to layer colour. In Fashila’s case, she’s actually using concealer to brighten the lighter parts instead of darkening parts of the face – this will still create dimension. She’s using colours that are only a little lighter or darker than the foundation.

Once you’re almost done, take a step away and see if there’s anything you want to enhance and deepen. Iana finishes the eye, applies mascara, blush and brushes the eyebrows out and then sets the face with a slightly tinted mineral powder.

Joy’s Make-Up Look – Naturally defined brows, mono-lid eyes and structured jawline

On Joy, Iana works with our model’s natural eye shape, an epicanthic or epicanthal fold. Instead of forcing a crease, she creates intensity at the lash line and places colour where the eyeball is. Then, where the eyeball ends, she places shimmer – this brings it forward, creating the appearance of a crease instead of a stark line. On Fashila, we used shimmer under the brow bone and in the middle of the lid to highlight, here where it usually appears as a uniform surface, the highlight creates the appearance of dimension.

Joy’s eyebrows are pretty well-defined, so Iana just fills in lightly where it’s sparser.

For the undereye, Iana likes to balance the eye — to match the shadow she put on the lids prior. On Joy, Iana actually matches the width of the shadow she placed above, and don’t neglect the bottom lash line! She blends the pencil liner between the lashes to create a fuller look, especially for the lower lash line.

As for foundation, Iana loves Shiseido, Lancome (for HK weather, try Selfridges for the full range, including deeper skin tones) and Charlotte Tilbury. She likes to dilute her heavier foundations with a moisturiser (forming your own CC cream!) which is what she’s done here on Joy.

As a finish, Iana brightens around the nasal folds, the bridge of the nose, and the centre of the forehead and applies a soft blush for more colour.

Final Make-Up Tips From Iana

  • Don’t overcomplicate the eyes — if you focus too hard on micro-trends and your exact “shape”, you’re bound to get overwhelmed. Instead, consider your personal preference for your eyes – it’s about what you like.
  • Think about your own unique selling point and what you love about your face
  • If you’re considering a bolder lip and brow, consider going lighter on the eye, aim to balance it out.
  • Make sure you always have two shades of foundation — one that is a little bit darker, one that is a little bit lighter. This will ensure you always have your shade no matter the season.
  • Brushes that are more round are great for blending powders, but for cream products, you need something flatter. A brush that’s too fluffy can create holes in your makeup.
  • Make sure to wash your brushes! Clean brushes really contribute to your skin condition. If you have acne or any skin conditions, it lives on your brush.
  • Concealer is used to lift, not conceal.

Whether you’re finding your skin is drying out as you age, worry it’s losing elasticity — which is what causes it to droop and wrinkle — or are just looking for some extra moisture and nourishment, a skin booster can be exactly what you need.

At High Society Skin Clinic, you and a professional can create a personalised treatment plan to transform your skin (or simply give it that desired boost!).

Skin boosters here are mainly formulated with hyaluronic acid, a superstar ingredient that hydrates and moisturises the skin, then enhanced with other components like vitamins, growth factors and minerals. They’re applied on the face as liquid and absorb near-instantly into the skin.

Here are the best ones on offer now:

  • Cytocare 532 is a cutting-edge skin booster that combines hyaluronic acid, vitamins, minerals, and peptides to deeply nourish, hydrate, and rejuvenate the skin. It’s also an ideal non-surgical solution for fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and uneven texture.
  • Filorga NCTF 135HA is an advanced mesotherapy treatment that provides comprehensive skin rejuvenation: replenishing your hydration, stimulating collagen production and delivering essential nutrients.
  • Blanc B uses hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants and minerals to provide nourishment, aid in skin repair and regeneration, and address issues like uneven skin tone and fine lines.
  • Plus, Xeomin, an injectable neurotoxin derived from botulinum toxin type A, is a great injectable option specifically formulated to temporarily relax your facial muscles to give a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Ensure optimal results tailored to your specific needs and wants when you consult with one of the centre’s medical specialists — a trained and registered doctor!

What To Know About Botox

We’re certainly pro-ageing — we know that weight fluctuation, a change in the way our bodies feel or the way our skin and hair look are all completely natural things. But, we also know that every person is different! Perhaps you’d rather not intervene in the age-old (wink, wink) dilemma of getting older or maybe you have specific moisturisers and face serums (and maybe a go-to facial) specifically to keep your skin looking its best. On the other hand, maybe you’ve been getting curious about more involved treatments, like Botox and fillers.

What Is Botox, Filler & An Injectable?

Botox is actually a brand name for botulinum toxin type A, an injectable neurotoxin that affects the nerves and causes muscle weakening. Botulinum toxin (temporarily!) blocks the signals from a nerve to a muscle, which means the injected muscles can’t contract and tense up. This relaxing and softening of the muscle results in a smoothening look to the skin and the prevention of fine lines and wrinkles, which are usually formed by muscle contraction. The effects are temporary but can last up to several months.

An “injectable” simply means a drug that can be put into the body using a needle and syringe. And a dermal “filler” is a gel-like substance that is injected beneath the skin for various reasons, most commonly for cosmetic purposes like creating volume, smoothening lines and softening creases and enhancing facial contours. Most injectable fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and last for about six months or longer.

The most common botulinum toxin is, of course, Botox. Other brands include Dysport and Xeomin which all work in similar ways.

What Is Botox Used For?

Injected in very small doses, botulinum toxin is most commonly known for reducing wrinkles and lines on the face — formed around the eyes, mouth and forehead when you frown, smile and squint. Lines may become less and less visible after each treatment as the muscles become less prominent, and you’re not just smoothening out already-formed lines but preventing new ones from appearing. It’s non-surgical, reliable and efficient.

Botulinum toxin can also be used to slim the face and lift and define the jawline, as well as on the neck to reduce vertical neck bands. In some places, you can even have diluted doses of botulinum toxin placed superficially just under the skin to reduce oiliness. You could also use it in the underarm area to reduce excessive sweating and in the forehead to help with chronic migraines.

What Are The Side Effects & Risks Of Botox?

  • While not very common, you may see reddening, swelling and minor bruising around the injection site.
  • A headache and flu-like symptoms for the first 24 hours
  • Administering too much botulinum toxin might result in a “frozen” or expressionless face, asymmetrical issues and even the drooping of the eyelids and eyebrows. Botox is temporary, so any of these issues will wear off.
  • Very rarely, serious problems like blurred or double vision (if injected around the eyes) or breathing difficulties (if injected in the neck area) can happen.

When administered by a fully-trained physician, botulinum toxin can produce consistent, natural and predictable results. We all have different muscle strengths and placements so the treatment should be as personalised as possible. We can’t emphasise enough how important it is to consult a doctor you can trust. Concentration and dosage make all the difference. We’d highly suggest reading the Department of Health’s informational page on cosmetic procedures and referring to its list of registered medical practitioners.

What To Expect When You Get Botox In Hong Kong

Botulinum toxin injections are a nonsurgical, in-office treatment that requires minimal preparation. Your face will be cleaned and an anaesthetic numbing cream may be applied. The botulinum toxin will be injected into muscles using a very fine needle. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes and typically takes two or three days to begin seeing the effect.

While it requires no downtime, it’s best to avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise for 24 hours, massaging and rubbing the face for about three days and facials for about two weeks. Your practitioner should give you more detailed advice.

What To Know & Consider Before You Get Botox In Hong Kong

  • If you’re thinking about having botulinum toxin injections, it’s important to be super clear about why you want them. For example, you may achieve similar effects with skincare products and facial treatments. All procedures have some risks and if you’re disappointed with the outcome, this could impact your emotional well-being. We’d suggest giving this informational page a read.
  • Do not get botulinum toxin injections if you have a skin infection, are unwell in any way, have a neuromuscular condition, and if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s also a great idea to consider all medication you take — for example, antidepressants and antihistamines do not compromise Botox treatments but aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may.
  • It’s not permanent — the effect will usually only last for three to four months (although it can last longer!)
  • A single session is sufficient to see results. You may wait a few days to see an initial effect and it may take a week or two to be fully visible but that one session will be more than enough.
  • Prices really vary in Hong Kong. While we’d ordinarily look to more affordable options, be wary of cheaper clinics that aren’t reputable and well-reviewed. Paying more and going through a licensed medical doctor is best — this is your face and body!
  • Make sure the person doing your injections is qualified and experienced. Skip salons and go directly to a Hong Kong-registered doctor. Review before-and-after photos to check their previous work and look for independent reviews online.
  • Schedule an initial consultation where you can express your needs and cosmetic desires to your practitioner. Make sure you’re comfortable with your doctor, and that their philosophy aligns with yours.
  • Ask your practitioner about their training, qualifications and experience; the name of the product, its license and where it’s made; risks and side-effects; and what will happen if things go wrong.
  • Clarify any previous dosages, which brands you’ve used before and are using now, then work out which will be most suitable for your skin. Make sure to also let your practitioner know your medical history, any allergies and all medical conditions.
  • Be wary of clinics that pressure you to purchase a higher injection dosage.

Gucci, Bloom Eau De Parfum

Chloé, Nomade Eau de Parfum Naturelle

All my perfume is gifted (I know, I know) so I just cycle bottles depending on mood! My usual go-to is Byredo’s Young Rose Eau De Parfum but for winter and the holidays, I’ve switched to Chloé’s Nomade Naturelle. A vegan and 100 natural original eau de parfum, it’s rooted in Egyptian jasmine, with smooth date accord and a warming vanilla and sandalwood base. For something a little deeper, I like Aesop’s Marrakech Intense Eau De Parfum for Indian weddings and functions. Is anyone still reading? I’m dying to get my hands on the Jo Malone Jasmine Sambac & Marigold Cologne Intense. Please buy it for me.

holiday fragrance perfume scents hong kong beauty go to marc jacobs daisy ever do fresh eau de parfum

Marc Jacobs, Daisy Ever So Fresh Eau De Parfum

From Marc Jacobs’ signature Daisy fragrance collection, the Ever So Fresh is a sweet scent with subtle floral undertones. Fresh and comforting, this perfume has notes of green tea blossom, matcha and a bright burst of pink pepper. Given that it’s an EDP, it’s long-lasting! And if you pick up the under 100ml one, you can easily travel with it. I also like Trussardi’s Donna Eau de Parfum, a strong and bold scent that lasts me the entire day. It’s not overly floral like many typical perfumes — instead, it’s slightly musky and works great as a summer or fall fragrance.

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet Eau de Toilette

You didn’t hear it from me, but our girl Kiran (Events and Partnerships Manager) is bougie! You can expect a little Dior on her face (she swears by its foundation!) at any given moment so it’s no surprise her pick is the Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet. A classic fragrance (first launched in 1947!), the eau de toilette mixes Damascus rose and peony notes with a soft and light white musk accord. Don’t miss its sweet pink bottle finished with a bow. Kiran also likes Chanel’s Gabrielle.

Le Labo, Bigarade 18

Our CEO Emilie’s pick is so exclusive, you can’t buy it online. Part of Le Labo’s city-exclusive line — scents only available to purchase in the city they’re named after (and worldwide for one month only every year!) — Bigarade 18 pays tribute to the brand’s founder Eddie Roschi’s memories of Hong Kong, where he lived as a child! Fragrant lily and citrus tree with long-lasting notes of bergamot, neroli, musk and wood make for a breezy, light and bright scent.

And no one asked for another pick from this writer but Le Labo’s Mousse de Chene 30 (the Amsterdam city exclusive) is so universally loved in my house, we even took it to my nikah ceremony to spray around the room.

Jo Malone London, Red Roses Cologne

Our Partnerships Support Executive Ira loves Jo Malone, especially limited-edition fragrances. She’s currently using the Plum Blossom Cologne (“sensual and grown-up kind of sweet”) and also likes the Rose Blush Cologne. But for a perfume that’s, you know, actually available to purchase in Hong Kong, she pointed me towards the Red Roses Cologne: a voluptuous blend of seven of the world’s most exquisite roses with crushed violet leaves and hints of lemon. She recommends layering different fragrances depending on your mood!

I travelled to Seoul for fun, which for me, of course, meant trying out as many beauty treatments as I could — micro-needling, a cryo facial, LED light therapy, Botox, lip filler and more — in one day. Specifically, nine treatments in three hours all at one stop.

As a self-proclaimed skincare addict (“wackjob” to be precise), I’ve gone to the furthest reaches of the globe to experience some of the most unique treatments the world has to offer. Dead skin-eating fish at the base of a waterfall in Laos? Sold. Mud bath in the jungle of Tulum? Yes, please. Mud wrap from the Dead Sea? Sign me up.

However, I’ve always considered Korean beauty the holy grail of skincare and South Korea, the holy land. I had planned a last-minute solo trip to Korea in June 2023 as a bit of my own “Eat, Pray, Love” experience but with only two goals in mind: 1. eat all of the Korean food (one of my favourites) and do all of the skin care — within just four days of travel. Challenge accepted.

south korea seoul trip nine facial treatments injectables filler botox beauty 1

Before arriving in South Korea, I didn’t have an exact laid-out plan of action. I had researched different clinics and read the reviews but didn’t know exactly what I wanted done (while simultaneously wanting it all).

I landed on a clinic known to be “foreigner-friendly”, which just meant: they spoke English and had… decent enough reviews (yes, I know. Never settle for decent when it comes to treatments). This was not a particularly glamorous space; it was a bit akin to a factory. There was no luxury to be found anywhere but that was okay, I was on a mission.

My appointment was set for 10:30am in Hongdae and when I say I was there early, I was there early! I arrived at 9am sharp and decided to walk off my excitement, lapping the neighbourhood twice before my scheduled appointment time.

I entered the reception area, which resembled an overly crowded waiting room in a regular doctor’s office except that every person was covered in numbing cream or bandages. So, perhaps more like an average plastic surgeon’s office in Beverly Hills.

south korea seoul trip nine facial treatments injectables filler botox beauty 2

By 11am I had gone through a consultation with the sales representatives. I imagine others having more invasive treatments would meet a registered Doctor well ahead of time. In my case, however, I simply sat with a salesperson for about 10 minutes, who asked me what I wanted to do, keeping in mind that I had “pretty nice skin” (to which I replied, “I know.” I’m nothing if not humble).

On the spot, I decided I wanted “glass skin” — a phrase I’ve heard tossed around usually in reference to K-pop stars (none of whom I follow so I didn’t have an actual idea of what this meant. But I love the phrase). Quickly, the sales representative pulled out a treatment package that included:

• An aqua oxygen peel facial treatment
• A cryotherapy cryo facial
• A mesotherapy (micro-needling) Chanel injection skin booster
• A Korean modeling mask
• Various sheet mask treatments
• and LED light therapy

All for the low cost of around 2,000 HKD.

But of course, that just wasn’t enough when it came to my quest to “do it all”. I found myself blurting out that I wanted masseter Botox and lip fillers, neither of which I had ever done before or even wanted. But here I was. In the sales office of a Mediclinic in Seoul, South Korea. By myself, deciding that, yes, today was the day I did it all.

Soon after the consultation, the sales representative applied numbing cream to my face in a manner like applying sunscreen. “Oh, is this going to be really painful?” I asked. How naive I was.

I was taken to a large room lined with treatment beds, kept apart by small dividers that gave you just the slightest sliver of privacy. Here, I lay down and a team immediately got to work.

At this point, while I knew all of the treatments were starting, I felt nothing. Not only because I had numbing cream on but also because I had just signed up to stick needles in my body, in a foreign country, by myself. I am truly terrified of needles so it was adrenaline and fear that kept me going.

south korea seoul trip nine facial treatments injectables filler botox beauty 3

To start, my skin was prepped and a gel-like substance was applied to help soothe. Pre-soaked toner pads were used to remove any extra sebum left. Immediately after this, we went right into an “aqua peel”.

The Korean aqua peel facial treatment was exactly as it may sound: water being shot at your face in an attempt to clear out any “gunk” that may be trapped in your pores.

Without a break or any hesitation, we moved immediately onto the Botox. Yes, the Botox that I had hastily signed up for. As I’m lying on the bed, I hear someone say “Botox” and then nothing else as someone shoots me in the face with needles. At this point, I am full-body sweating because this abrupt turn without any clear warning was terrifying.

I happened to be live texting my friends throughout the treatment, but at this point, I’ve simply sent a “YIKES”. The rest of my messages looked like this:

south korea seoul trip nine facial treatments injectables filler botox beauty 5

It’s now 12pm, and we haven’t even made it halfway through. Immediately following the Botox attack, we moved onto microneedling which, comparatively, was not painful at all. I’ve heard many people say microneedling is incredibly painful but it’s possible that all the adrenaline from the anxiety of Botox was keeping me from feeling anything else.

To help cool down my face after all the poking and prodding, I had a cryo facial, which essentially felt like an ice cube being pushed around on my skin. Then, we moved on to the LED light therapy, where an LED box-like device was placed over my head with a sheet mask, to help my skin recover from the assault it had just experienced.

I was told we were at the last step of the procedures — for this room. We ended this round with a Korean modeling mask; a clay mask put on the skin wet, designed to harden and mould as it dries.

south korea seoul trip nine facial treatments injectables filler botox beauty 6

At this point, it’s almost 1pm and I’m over it.

As we move to a different floor for the cosmetic injectables, I’m now regretting all of my life choices that got me here and second-guessing them all.

Again, I find myself in a waiting room, this time, a smaller space with less bandaged clients. I’ve asked them twice to reapply the numbing cream because I am terrified of having a needle shot into my lips.

As I’m brought to a room by a nurse who does not speak English, I’m greeted by a doctor (or at least a man in a white coat) who speaks limited English and is coming at me with a needle.

Understanding that I am the one in a foreign country and I need to adapt to their language, not the other way around, I attempt to navigate using a combination of Google Translate and broken English to tell them: 1. I want my lips to look as natural as possible and 2. to ask if this will hurt.

The doctor simply smiled back at me and began to inject; I started involuntarily tearing up.

While it seems everyone in the world is constantly getting filler and Botox, none of them ever seem to warn you how painful it really is.

I was technically done in just five minutes, but I continued to text my friends for three more hours about how much pain I was in. It was that bad.

As I leave the clinic, the receptionist yells after me to not forget to grab medicine at the pharmacy. This stops me dead in my tracks. No one had given me a single second of aftercare instruction or informed me that I would be on medication for a full week. It was at this moment, that I learnt I needed to shield my skin for two days from the sun, could not use straws for two weeks and that I would be on antibiotics for an entire week.

All brand-new information to me, as I’m nursing my self-inflicted wounds on the way out the door.

So, the big question is: would I do it again? Unfortunately, since I’m a glutton for punishment — yes. While the experience was painful and terrifying, the results were unmatched. Plus combined with the cost, I couldn’t possibly say no! But maybe, I’ll wait a few more months…
