When we were told we had to dress in activewear and head to Sai Kung for our next Sassy Social, we naturally thought the team would be getting together for an afternoon hike. Upon arriving at our destination, we’re surprised to be welcomed by a large sign reading “PADEL+” and a club that led us out to bright blue courts in the back. The name of the club gave us a little hint about the kind of sport we’d be playing but none of us recognised the chunky carbon-fibre rackets that were displayed on the walls. We soon found out that we would be trying a little-known sport (to Hong Kong at least!) that has recently been gaining popularity in Europe. Needless to say, we were excited to hop on the trend! Read on to learn more about the sport and find out how our day at PADEL+ Hong Kong went.

What is Padel?

With origins in Latin America, padel tennis actually first emerged all the way back in the early 70s. It is essentially a racket sport that blends tennis and squash. Padel is played on a smaller, enclosed court, and it’s these walls that add an exciting twist to the game. The goal is to use the walls strategically to create unexpected angles and shots.

Our Visit To PADEL+ Hong Kong

Tucked away in Sai Kung is Hong Kong’s first padel club, PADEL+ Hong Kong. Complete with a cafe, changing rooms, equipment shop and specially designed padel courts, the club offers a range of private and group padel sessions, for all levels of experience. Here’s what our team members thought about the sport:

Experience level: I felt a mix of excitement but mostly nerves stepping into the court as it was my first time playing tennis and having almost failed table tennis in high school P.E.

What I enjoyed about the sport: After a few hits and way more misses, my competitive spirit started to come out. I love that it’s a social sport that offers significant fitness benefits. It’s a great way to bond with friends and stay active at the same time.

After the class I felt… challenged! I embraced the game with a beginner’s passion and discovered the joy of padel one swing at a time.

Experience level: Zero! First time I heard about padel.

What I enjoyed about the sport: As soon as I stepped onto the PADEL+ court, the carbon fibre racket felt like an extension of my arm. A light tap easily sent the ball flying. The responsiveness of the racket really surprised me, and I really enjoyed seeing how far the ball went with such little power.

After the class I felt… happy! Being surrounded by nature, in the midst of a cool breeze and tons of trees, I felt super energised running across the cobalt blue court.

Experience level: I’m an enthusiastic tennis player.

What I enjoyed about the sport: I loved how fun and accessible it was, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying my time on the court. It was surprisingly easy to pick up although the rules can be a little tricky to remember. The coach was excellent – always attentive and hands-on. He organised engaging games that got everyone involved, and the team had a blast playing together.

After the class, I felt… excited to learn a new sport and am looking forward to sharing it with my family.

Experience level: I went in feeling quite apprehensive about learning a new sport. I was never great at P.E. in school and I couldn’t remember the last time I played badminton, squash or tennis.

What I enjoyed about the sport: The sport was surprisingly easy to pick up! I wasn’t the best at keeping score, but the rules were simple enough to remember. I guess those tennis and badminton lessons back in the day paid off because I managed to hit the ball in the right direction (more or less…) – and the popping sound the ball made each time it hit the paddle was always very satisfying.

After the class I felt… energised! I forgot how good it feels to have that boost of endorphins rush through you after a good workout. It was also fun to see the competitive side of some of my colleagues come out!

Experience level: It was my first time playing padel but I do play tennis.

What I enjoyed about the sport: It’s challenging and fun. There are lots of rules to be learned, being a mix of squash and tennis. I also enjoyed the fact that it’s a social sport, I had a wonderful time playing with my colleagues.

After the class I felt… invigorated! I enjoyed trying a new sport and learning the rules and how it differed from tennis. It was a great workout and with the courts surrounded by nature, I left feeling calm and relaxed.

Not your typical studio, Russ Dance Factory is a longstanding space in the heart of Causeway Bay that truly emphasises dance. It boasts plenty of dance fitness classes and choreography-focused sessions, promising to be a lot of fun and get you moving and grooving. Team Sassy trialled a dance fitness class to get a real feel of the studio space and sat down with Founder Russ Fernandez to break down exactly what’s on offer, what you can expect and what makes this boutique dance space unique.

A Little Bit About Russ Dance Factory

Founder Russ Fernandez is a dancer with many years of experience under his belt; he’s a lead dance instructor here and opened the studio in April of 2014 (which means Russ Dance Factory’s 10-year anniversary is coming up soon!). Opening his own space allowed Russ to break free from the limitations of existing fitness studios and offer a unique dance fitness experience.

Russ Dance Factory was established on the basis of really having fun and focusing on dance itself. An all-women dance and fitness space, it’s backed by an international team of professionally trained dance instructors. In fact, each instructor here is actually auditioned by Russ and his team, who look for all-rounders with a high dance skill set; teachers who can conduct a fun and effective class, with a real eagerness to teach.

Russ feels that there’s a difference between “fitness dance” and “dance fitness” — the emphasis at Russ Dance Factory is on dance (but you’ll still get a workout in!). Classes typically run for about one hour and a half per session, and your dance instructor does all the choreography. They generally fall into three categories: dance fitness classes, HIIT classes and dance choreography classes.

I’m New To Dance — What Can I Expect From A Dance Fitness Class?

It’s all about trying and then figuring out how much dance ability you actually have. And you can continue to try different classes and instructors, so you can see which suits you best.

You can contact Russ Dance Factory via social media (like Instagram or Facebook) or by phone — that’s what most new customers tend to do! You’ll learn about the trial promotion and can let Russ Dance Factory know about your experience with dance.

Feel like you have zero experience? Russ says “zero experience” can really vary: maybe you’ve never attended a class but you have plenty of rhythm. Speak to the team at length and give them as much information as you can, so they can advise you and allocate you to a suitable class based on your needs, experience and skills. At the end of the day, if you come in, you will learn something! After all, you won’t keep fit by just thinking about it.

We tried out a 90-minute dance fitness class where we followed the dance instructor non-stop. It was a real break-a-sweat session! This is a great option for those of us who have only so much time in the week and are looking to get the most out of our 90 minutes. You could also opt for a dance choreography class, where more complex movements and steps are broken down and you’ll learn more about the genre and art form.

Russ Dance Factory is familiar with a range of different crowds, and they’re all ready to attend the intensive “break a sweat” dance fitness; RDFunky classes as well as the complex dance choreography classes. Trying is the first step to rediscovering yourself.

What Makes Russ Dance Factory Different?

Arguably, what makes Russ Dance Factory stand out is the studio’s approach to dance fitness. There’s a real appreciation for the art here and you’ll have a ton of fun in the dance-based workout-style RDFunky fitness sessions as well as getting a taste of K-pop, hip-hop, jazz funk and pop jazz to name a few. Dance classes here aren’t restricted to one single genre, so trendy choreography is fusion-inspired and totally fluid.

And location, location, location! Set in between Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, just around the corner of Times Square, it’s convenient; it’s super easy to drop in at any time of the day. Russ says many students and women even attend multiple classes in a day (there are close to 140 classes weekly, happening every half an hour), dancing through the afternoon and socialising with others.

When you’re literally dancing for hours, it doesn’t feel like a workout! And we love the opportunity to make new friends, as this is an all-women studio. The energy is super young and fresh, but welcoming to everyone.

After feeling frustrated with a lack of energy and being unable to achieve some key health goals, despite eating “healthy,” two members of the Sassy team decided to seek out some expert advice. Seasoned nutritionist, Luke Davey, of Nu Performance helped us delve into the mysteries around our stalled progress by completing the Transformation Programme. Week 1 — The Power Of A Personalised Plan

The first step was a one-to-one consultation with our nutritionist Luke. We discussed everything from our individual goals, dietary preferences and lifestyle constraints and then underwent a full body specialised imaging technique called a DEXCA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) — the gold standard for measuring body composition, bone density, and mineral content. To round out week one, we shared our food photo diary. Full disclosure:

Being faced with the results of the DEXA scan and exposing some of our unhealthy eating habits was tough!

Key takeaway from week one: without fully understanding where we were starting our journey, it would have been impossible to make real progress.

Week 2 — Fail To Prepare, Prepare To Fail

With such busy schedules, we both noticed that our last-minute food choices were often where we were going “wrong’” (…hello tub of ice cream for dinner at the end of a bad day!). Food preparation was a big focus for us this week. From colourful fruits and vegetables to proteins and whole grains, we learned that a well-rounded diet is the foundation of good health. Luke shared a tailored recipe book with us which includes some easy and delicious high protein recipes which were quick to prepare, and he also gave some direction on better choices that we could make when grocery shopping to make sure we could look for some quick fixes.

In some cases it was as simple switching the brand of yoghurt we were eating, or which brand of protein bar has better carb to protein ratio.

Key takeaway from week two: There is so much power in creating habitual changes and nourishing our bodies with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods.

Week 3 — Finding Balance

Despite our best intentions, we were both falling back into some bad habits and realised that we needed to look at some long-term realistic improvements in our daily choices. For us it involved finding some alternative sweet snacks and simple ways to increase our protein intake (which plays a vital role in building and repairing tissues, supporting a healthy immune system, and regulating hormones!).

Key takeaway from week three: There are easy changes you can make to still enjoy your favourite treats in moderation.

Week 4 — Learning And Adapting

 To ensure our relationship with food is healthy and the diet is sustainable, Luke provided us with nutritional facts which will help us stay on track for the coming weeks. The Transformation Programme with Nu Performance comes with a weekly check-in (it’s crucial to understand what our body needs in order to make the correct tweaks…), where we learn to develop a positive attitude towards food and how we can improve our overall health.

Even with a proper balanced diet, it is possible to have missed a few of the key minerals, causing us to be fatigued.

Key takeaway from week four: incorporating supplements into your balanced diet can go a long way and help you feel more fulfilled.

Final Thoughts…

Consulting with a nutritionist has been an eye-opening experience that definitely required patience and persistence to create a sustainable and healthy diet (and some lifestyle changes too). By addressing our goals with Luke, who has over 10 years of experience delivering programmes for weight loss, health and also sports performance, we felt confident that we could rely on his science-driven research to create a long-term, nutritional meal plan, that was just right for us and our individual life variations. we were able to create a realistic path toward our health goals, with daily support from Luke when we needed it.
